Amazon Front End Engineer II, AWS Accessibility in Arlington, Virginia

Description

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS. Within AWS UC, Amazon Dedicated Cloud (ADC) roles engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

The AWS Accessibility team is looking for a passionate Full Stack Engineer to help drive the future of accessibility at AWS on a global scale. In this role, you will create innovative technologies that empower 260+ AWS service teams to build accessible user experiences across web, mobile, and conversational interfaces. Your work will help ensure customers can efficiently access what they need on AWS by removing accessibility barriers.

Key job responsibilities

As a Full Stack Engineer at AWS Accessibility, you will:

  • Design and build services that empower AWS builders to create accessible user experiences, leveraging modern web technologies and open-source tools to raise the accessibility bar

  • Collaborate with other engaged, friendly, principles-first thinking oriented engineers to understand customer needs and build a modern accessibility platform

  • Operate across multiple layers of the stack to design and build fault-tolerant distributed systems, develop tools to test and analyze complex systems, and dig into critical pieces of distributed systems like logging, tracing, metrics

  • Write tooling to help you and other engineers move faster

  • Challenge and mentor other engineers

  • Code with confidence, supported by continuous builds, tests, a constructive code-review process, and a supportive culture of identifying and fixing bugs

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Arlington, VA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of non-internship professional front end, web or mobile software development using JavaScript, HTML and CSS experience

  • Experience building scalable, distributed, front-end experiences

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence

  • Experience in computer science fundamentals (object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving and complexity analysis)

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth understanding of accessibility standards and best practices, including the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

  • Experience with assistive technology (e.g., screen readers, screen magnifiers, voice recognition) in conducting accessibility testing

  • Experience with any major JavaScript framework, TypeScript and Node.js

  • Experience with distributed systems design, and understanding of design for scalability, performance, security and reliability

  • Strong communication skills, and experience mentoring other engineers

  • Self-motivated, able to solve problems independently, and able to work well in teams
