This is an Engineering Technician II position located in the Andrews Construction Office. This position will serve as a Project Inspector on roadway and structure projects. Project Inspectors are required to review NPDES paperwork and complete assorted documentation such as daily diaries, sample cards, asphalt reports, concrete reports, pay record books, materials received forms and monthly estimates. Project Inspectors also monitor and inspect erosion control and traffic control devices, test concrete, perform densities (conventional & nuclear), take materials samples and inspect asphalt. Project Inspectors take field measurements and perform a wide range of calculations and computations to determine contract pay quantities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.

  • Demonstrated ability supervising lower level technicians in order to obtain desired results.

  • Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports.

  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.

  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.

Additional Expectations:

Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection and surveying. General knowledge in mathematics and ability to use a calculator to perform basic calculations. Ability to conduct routine entry-level inspections for compliance with contract documents, standards and specifications. Ability to maintain neat and legible records and reports. Ability to perform computer/iPad data entry. Ability to serve as survey crew member and assist with project stakeout. Ability to operate surveying equipment. Ability to perform sampling and testing inspection duties to evaluate acceptance of materials. Ability to exercise limited decision-making and judgment. Ability to establish positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Requires ability to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Must be able to work in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety toe shoes required. Employee will be assigned to various types of projects around Division 14.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associates degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
