Transportation Engineer IPerforms transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.Transportation Engineer IIPerforms complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.Transportation Engineer IIIPerforms advanced transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.Essential Duties:Transportation Engineer IAssists in overseeing construction project traffic control plans; periodically reviews traffic control devices with Area Engineers.Assists in reviewing shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures.Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement, while utilizing available resources and maintaining the agency's project objectives.Conducts pre-construction meetings and public hearings.Investigates and responds to public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings, traffic management systems or other traffic related items.Investigates materials failures or fabrication problems; reviews test data and assists in determining cause of failing materials.Leads/Trains professional and administrative staff.Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.Resolves differences between contractors and inspectors.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.Transportation Engineer II includes the above and:Assists Area Engineers with construction contract administration matters.Oversees construction and audit records.Trains engineering staff.Acts as consultant to staff engineers to coordinate construction operations.Assesses and reports actual project progress versus planned progress to determine trends and variances for routine projects.Assists in recommending major maintenance and betterment programs to the district staff.Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.Coordinates and/or monitors assigned projects/programs/plans.Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.Meets with law enforcement agencies and/or city officials to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions.Responsible for the review of construction related to operations.Transportation Engineer III includes the above and:Evaluates and makes recommendations for developing, monitoring, and updating integrated project plans and schedules so that projects may be executed in the most efficient and effective manner possible.Performs structural review of complex forming, false wor and erection details.Assists Project Managers to establish realistic and achievable schedule baselines for complex projects.
