Fixed Equipment Reliability Engineer

Job Summary:

The Garyville Marathon Refinery has an opening for a Fixed Equipment Reliability Engineer. The Fixed Equipment Reliability Engineer will identify and develop solutions for unreliable heat exchangers, fire heaters, pressure vessels, tanks, piping, and piping components in the refinery. These solutions, which sometimes include new sitewide initiatives, contribute to longer run time, reduction in maintenance cost, and improved safety. The job role includes technical and strategic support on preventive maintenance, repair, and operation of existing equipment as well as engineering support on modifications and on new equipment specification. The position requires interfacing with inspectors, project engineers, process engineers, operations specialists, supervision, and management. The schedule for the position is 4/10 - Monday - Thursday, after hours calls occur about 1-4 times a month as needed and support of TAR 1-3 times a year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review work order failure coding and make corrections as needed.

  • Utilize work order data to identify “bad actors” with high maintenance cost or high cost of downtime.

  • Submit Project Request Forms (PRFs) and assist in Decision Support Package (DSP) creation which includes developing concepts and cost justification for fixed equipment reliability improvements such as material upgrades for heat exchanger tube bundles and pressure vessels.

  • Champion Management of Change for maintenance driven changes and minor modifications to improve reliability.

  • Manage heat exchanger tube bundle assessment program to make recommendations for inspection or replacement timing based on life cycle and potential lost opportunity costs.

  • Manage fixed equipment spare parts and updates to equipment files and to the asset database, submitting drawings to librarians, stock change requests to material coordinators, and change forms to the asset database coordinator.

  • Troubleshoot problems with pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping, bolted joints, and combustion equipment and provide technical support to area operating teams. Examples include piping vibration, corrosion, and poor sealing.

  • Manage in-kind replacements of fixed equipment which includes budgeting, creating bid or quote request packages, reviewing proposals, and reviewing fabrication drawings.

  • Lead formal incident investigations to determine root causes and corrective actions for equipment failures and champion the implementation of recommendations resulting from incident investigations.

  • Perform fitness for service and remaining life assessments for pressure vessels according to industry codes and standards.

  • Develop repair procedures for pressure vessels which include specification of materials, welding details, and non-destructive testing.

  • Provide leadership and decision-making on repair solutions during turnarounds and unplanned equipment outages.

  • Assist process engineers with equipment capacity increase evaluations.

  • Participate in capital and expense project development, aiding in equipment design/specification and cost estimation and ensuring compliance with Marathon fixed equipment specifications an adherence to good reliability practices.

  • Utilize reliability tools such as Asset Criticality Analysis, TapRoot, and Life cycle cost analysis.

  • Support and consult corporate fixed equipment specialists.

  • Participate in Unit Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs).

  • Occasionally train craft technicians and operators.

Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Must have at least 3 years of Engineering experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry with exposure to fixed equipment.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

  • Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card within 90 days of hire.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.

  • The schedule for the position is 4/10 - Monday - Thursday, after hours calls occur about 1-4 times a month as needed and support of TAR 1-3 times a year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • TEMA, ASME Section VIII Division 1, ASME PCC-1, ASME PCC-2, API 560, API 579, API 660, API 661 is preferred.

  • GE APM, Equity Engineering SagePlus, Codeware INSPECT is preferred.

  • API 510, API 570, API 653, API 571, NBIC is preferred.

  • SAP experience is preferred.

  • A valid driver’s license is preferred. (MPC determines valid status.)
