Fixed Equipment Engineer

ABSG Consulting is currently seeking to fill the position of Fixed Equipment Engineer in the Asset Integrity Management group, Safety, Risk, and Compliance (SRC) unit located in Houston, TX. This role is primarily to provide operational support and improve the engineering analysis process for various clientele. The ideal candidate possesses an engineering degree, is self-motivated, and willing to be an integral part of the SRC team. The successful candidate will perform analytical evaluations and manage contractors and inspectors for inspection of pressure vessels, storage tanks, piping systems, pressure relief devices, and rotating equipment in industrial settings, and therefore should be adept at field and office activities. Excellent verbal/non-verbal communications and technical report writing skills are required.

Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Providing subject matter expert (SME) knowledge and technical review for the design and failure analysis of fixed equipment and piping systems.

  • Conducting design and re-engineering calculations for fixed equipment and piping to applicable design and in-service codes and standards.

  • Developing computational 3D modelling of fixed equipment and piping, including operational and occasional internal/external loading considerations, for stress analysis and evaluation of acceptance criteria for continued use due to in-service flaws/damage.

  • Reviewing codes, standards, and other recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices.

  • Recommending strategies for run, repair, rerate for fixed equipment and piping with identified flaws/damage.

  • Providing support for capital projects, process engineering, and contractors supporting MI program development.

  • Supporting mechanical integrity (MI) program activities such as training process engineers, project engineers and reliability engineers on MI processes and procedures.

  • Coordinating/consulting with client maintenance, operations, and project groups in the delivery of MI program deliverables.

  • Supporting the SRC team objectives

  • Integration of management systems supporting Mechanical Integrity for fixed equipment, relief systems and rotating equipment.

  • Project Management functions such as resource management, cost monitoring, and progress reporting for MI-related projects.

  • Developing and/or revising MI procedures.

  • Supporting clientele in the definition, implementation, and sustainability of risk management initiatives identified to deliver continuous improvement and/or compliance with industry/regulatory changes associated with MI.

  • Supporting audits and surveys relative to MI programs for fixed equipment, relief systems, and rotating equipment.

  • Quality control checks/audits of work and deliverables for timeliness, accuracy, and adherence to MI program guidelines and procedures. Audits may include maintenance records and/or third party vendor records relevant to the design or testing of fixed equipment, relief devices and rotating equipment.

  • Reviewing client information to identify, track, and report MI trends on equipment.

  • Working collaboratively with other functional groups within the organization.

  • A strong commitment to safety and an active role in office and plant safety activities.

Qualifications

Preferred skills and abilities:

  • Industrial inspection, operations, and maintenance experience

  • Fixed equipment and piping design, repair, and stress analysis

  • Plant engineering experience

  • Process improvement experience

  • Technical procedure writing

  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work unsupervised

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to write reports detailing assessments and results

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications and AutoCAD

  • Experience with pressure vessel design software (Compress or PVElite) and piping design software (Caesar II or equivalent)

  • Experience with finite element analysis software (Solidworks or Ansys)

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a growing environment

  • EIT (FE) and/or desire to acquire PE

  • Familiarity with API, ASME, NACE, NBIC, DOT

Requirements:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.

  • 5 - 10 years of experience in fixed equipment design, fabrication, installation, and repair.

  • Domestic and international short term travel up to 25%.

  • Possess or be eligible for a Passport.

  • Demonstrated ability in the practical application of 29 CFR 1910.119 regulations, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31 series Piping Codes, API 579, and ANSI/NB-23 National Board Inspection Code.

  • Working knowledge of API 510, 570, 572, 574, 576, 580 and 581 codes or recommended practices.

  • Ability to perform: (1) code design calculations (2) finite element analysis (3) safety/risk/fitness for service assessments for fixed equipment and piping, relief systems, and rotating equipment.
