Job Description
AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Coastal Engineer based in one of our west coast offices. This position is expected to begin immediately.
AECOM is searching for candidates that are proactive, strong communicators, and work well in a team. Candidate must be able to support complex planning and engineering studies in coastal resilience and floodplain management and have experience with coastal science, engineering, and management. The selected candidate will join AECOM’s Flood Risk Solutions Group. The primary emphasis of the group is to promote floodplain resilience efforts at the local, state, and federal level. This is accomplished through employing coastal analysis and modeling techniques to solve complex challenges facing our coastal and estuarine communities.
Job Summary/Responsibilities:
This role will support coastal science, engineering, and resilience projects for local, state, and federal clients in California, Washington, and across the nation. Knowledge and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Work with a team of engineers, scientists, and GIS specialists in support of coastal engineering and science projects along Pacific coastal and estuarine shorelines
Conduct coastal resilience studies that involve sea level rise analysis, coastal erosion and shoreline change, hydrodynamic and wave modeling, vulnerability and risk assessments, and adaptation planning
Contribute to AECOM’s support of FEMA’s coastal floodplain analysis and mapping program
Collaborate with AECOM’s other business lines on coastal and climate resilience projects for communities, ecosystems, and infrastructure
Develop innovative solutions to enhance coastal resilience ranging from traditional shoreline protection measures to nature-based adaptation strategies
Conduct planning, engineering, design, and monitoring of coastal engineering, shoreline restoration, coastal zone management, and port and harbor studies and projects.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
BS in Civil Engineering, civil/coastal engineering, environmental science, or related field
Demonstrated experience with computer programming and data analysis such as Matlab or Python
Experience with commercial mapping software such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, or AutoCAD
Proven knowledge of coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and waves
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree or three years of experience in coastal science, civil/coastal engineering, environmental science, or related field
2 years of consulting experience
Knowledge and experience with FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program and floodplain management
Knowledge of Pacific coast geography, climate, coastal zone regulatory agencies, and grant programs
Familiarity with publicly available metocean datasets, such as tide observations and predictions and wind/wave hindcasts
Familiarity with standard coastal engineering methodologies such as SPM, CEM, EurOtop, etc. for calculations of wave runup, overtopping, and wave loads
Familiarity with longshore transport and morphology analyses and modeling studies
Familiarity with coastal modeling software such as SWAN, DELFT3D, MIKE, XBeach, or HEC-RAS
Experience preparing technical reports and memos
Ability to obtain professional engineering license
Experience with communicating complex technical topics to diverse stakeholders and the public

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $75,000.00 - $95,000.00.
