In 2023, LUMCON expanded its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

LUMCON is hiring a United State Coast Guard licensed National Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED). This position is under the general supervision of the ship’s Captain, and direct supervision of the ship’s Chief Engineer. The successful applicant will be employed aboard the Research Vessel POINT SUR.

The position will be domiciled at the Port of Gulfport, MS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • USCG licensed National Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED).

  • High school education and/or equivalent.

  • Pass U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) screening for Chemical Drug and Alcohol.

  • U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW95).

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing using standard office software applications.

  • Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods.

  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs., climb stairs and ladders and work during inclement weather.

IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job.

  • Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment, as necessary.

  • Knowledge of computer systems and interest in Marine Sciences or related field.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with diverse groups.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:

  • Assist Chief Engineer in daily maintenance, organizing paperwork, stowing/securing equipment, oil changes, and fuel transfers, loading/unloading.

  • Perform various vessel maintenance activities including deck and equipment repairs; cleaning, painting, and lubricating deck machinery, blocks, tackle, and other painted surfaces; making periodic checks on various equipment.

  • Stand engine room watches at sea and generator watches in port.

  • Repair, maintain and operate various deck winches.

  • Perform non-skilled duties including wiping oil, maintaining tools, cleaning, painting of engine equipment and spaces.

  • Perform various waterfront maintenance tasks including dock cleaning and maintenance.

  • Assist in fieldwork sampling activities including oceanographic research work and repair of sampling equipment.

  • Assist with inspection of alarms, emergency equipment and pumps.

  • Conduct marine rigging of wire rope and connecting gear.

  • Managing Inventory and updating of marine maintenance management system.
