Microsoft Corporation Software Engineer II in Redmond, Washington

Microsoft is a company where passionate innovators come to collaborate, envision what can be and take their careers further. This is a world of more possibilities, more innovation, more openness, and the sky is the limit thinking in a cloud-enabled world.

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include are Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB (Data Base), Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI (Artificial Intelligence), powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

Within Azure Data, the Databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

We are looking for a Software Engineer II to join the Azure SQL Database group, with a passion for technology, building high-performance mission critical systems and helping customers succeed on our platform by building industry-leading features and capabilities.

The Azure SQL Database service has millions of databases under its management. With this unprecedented growth come exciting technical challenges at scales previously unimaginable. These problems span from a wide range of software engineering areas like core database systems (query processing, transaction processing, efficient locking, storage management), operating systems capabilities (scheduling, memory management, synchronization, resource governance), highly distributed systems (availability, geo-replication, disaster recovery, backup & restore, modern scale-out architectures), and networking systems (protocol design, SDNs, high-performance transports like RDMA).

Additionally, the SQL Database service has a Control Plane processing billions of REST API calls every month with predictable SLA and requiring 100% consistency, instant elasticity, tolerating underlying system failures, software and hardware upgrades and reconfiguration, that enables resource placement and optimal capacity utilization within a cluster and a region (datacenter design and network topology).

We seek engineers with experience in one or more of these areas who are passionate about delivering high-quality features our customers will use and love.

This team is on a mission to define and deliver the best relational database service in the world. At your disposal there will be SQL's state-of-the-art management system, a sophisticated database engine, and terabytes of telemetry to make informed decisions.

We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to current and future product improvements around reliability and performance of the database service.

  • Strengthen the engineering process to ensure cloud deployments are done in the most efficient way and meet the targeted reliability, performance, scalability, and Service Level Agreement (SLA) goals.

  • Identify improvements in supportability and customer self-diagnostics to enhance live monitoring and address performance and reliability related issues.

  • Collaborate, teach, and learn from a diverse team of world-class engineers.

  • Learn ourcustomers’ experience first-hand by participating in the on-call rotation for the service teams.

  • Drive decisions with data, prioritize customer obsession, and leverage telemetry from production systems and customer usage patterns.
