Job Description

Purpose:

The research focus for this position is in the broad area of large-scale electric power systems with a particular focus on cyber-physical system modeling, analysis, and response, on high-fidelity static and dynamic electric grid simulations, and testbed emulations. Examples of simulation research include power flow and stability analysis. The research has a particular focus on power system optimization, simulating and analyzing the impacts of high impact low frequency events including hazards due to natural disasters as well as accidental and malicious events of a cyber-physical nature. The research in cyber-physical power systems has a strong focus on realism and accuracy of its models and the utility of its results to transfer into practice and transform the industry. It includes modeling and visualizing the mechanisms of failure of these systems as well as their risks and impacts, such as cyber-originated threats and severe weather on the power system.

The Senior Research Engineer I independently develops and applies new advanced knowledge in scientific research and engineering principles and practices, in broad areas of project assignments, industry and government stakeholders, and related fields. The Senior Research Engineer I represents the supervisor’s team and projects in the group’s information dissemination, outreach, and technology transition activities. Examples include conferences and workshops, to share and receive feedback on our research in agile discussions with stakeholders, to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work. The Senior Research Engineer I devises new approaches to the problems encountered and he/she widely applies complex system principles, theories, and concepts in the specific field. The Senior Research Engineer I demonstrates autonomy, independence, clear communications, and leadership as he/she works closely with the supervisor and her team on solving complex problems of diverse scope, where analysis of situations and data is paramount. The Senior Research Engineer I exhibits creativity, foresight and mature judgment in conducting research programs/projects.

The Senior Research Engineer I independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Represents the project in conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work. Devises new approaches to problems encountered. Uses a wide application of complex principles, theories and concepts in the specific field or fields. Works on extremely complex problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of intangible variance factors. Exhibits creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in conducting research programs/projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Carries out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved research orengineering techniques and procedures associated with large-scale electric grids and their security andresilience as coupled cyber-physical critical infrastructure. Work is expected to result in the development ofnew and refined models, processes, products, and/or scientific methods and approaches.

  • In a supervisory capacity, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs a large and significant project, or severalsmall projects with numerous complex features; may require the use of sophisticated project planningtechniques.

  • Provides mentoring and training of research staff (graduate students); uses national network to identify highcaliber research talent.

  • Develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others.Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed tests, products and equipment when necessary data areinsufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.

  • Provides ideas to improve organizational efficiency at all levels of the unit/department.

  • Presents invited papers; primary author or key contributor on major reports, products, papers, presentations,and peer reviewed journals.

  • Serves as engineering lead resource, and provides guidance to industry engineers working in collaborationwith the Lab. Generates periodic reports and provide recommendations on methods which support the long-termgoals and visions of the Lab.

  • Plays a key role in the acquisition of research funding; identifies sources of new contract funding and directsthe preparation of proposals and presentations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    What we need:

  • Master’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Six years of related experience.
